 ABOUT US AND OUR WORK

 

LIVE EDGE online is the brainchild of John Blunt, and the offspring of IsGood Woodworks our top level custom cabinet shop in Seattle, WA. We started LIVE EDGE online to satisfy a craving for unfettered creativity and sustainable green business practices.


WHAT IS LIVE EDGE?

“Live edge” refers to the living part of the tree, the outer rings. The log is cut into slabs and the entire slab is used, leaving the natural edge. Only the bark is removed. Many people credit George Nakashima as the originator of the genre. See nakashimawoodworker.com to learn more.

 

PHILOSOPHY AND PRACTICE

 In nature form does not follow function; they are one, in perfect integration. It is our job to respect that mystery, to make the idea of each design and the creation one. Look at the wood. Pick it up. Within the context of the type of object you intend, see how it fits itself. Using your idea as a flexible tool, embark on a childlike activity of creation. You are working in balanced partnership with the world around you, with practiced skill and a quiet mind.

 

In practice, we use materials that are ecologically benign. The wood we use is salvaged, reclaimed or sustainably harvested in a manner that benefits damaged forest ecologies. Our finish is made from rapidly renewable materials, and produces very low volatile organic vapor. Our workmanship produces objects of beauty and longevity, designed to last for generations, using the strongest joinery and highest finesse.
